Messa Di Orfeo is a brand new album by POPOL VUH. It has been based on major events which were first happening in Italy and which will be also produced in Germany. Most of the recording was done live in Bari (Italy) with about one hundred musicians. Additional recordings were done in Munchen (Germany). Messa Di Orfeo is released under a standard jewel box configuration, but with a full color 16 pages booklet. With this CD, POPOL VUH adds another major work to its constant search for the fusion of mysticism and music.

Fano event was the remake of the Time Zone '98 installation, the soundtrack of which you can found on the new Spalax CD (however recorded at the Time Zone event)...The Fano event was done between July 15th to 18th in a sort of castle in Fano, named "Rocca Malatestiana". A beautiful place, very Vuh-esque. The space into the Rocca was filled with strange mirrors, beehive-like illuminations and projection sheets where slow films were projected, as a sort of visual mantra. The argument were about bees (a late Fricke obsession), sort of Angkor Vat-like statues into jungle that gradually vanishes/disintegrates, and the sense of union with earth. The tracks of the performance, as on record, had Guillermina De Germano on vocals in Italian (two line from lyrics that I try to translate: "Me and the earth are one / His body and my body are one"). Seems that Florian is again involved in long tracks, that are similar more to "In Der Garten Pharaos" or the choir use of "Bruder der Schattens" than to the Fichelscher involved records. Maybe note of interest can be the Frank Fieldler return to collaborate with Florian.

Po siedmiu latach chudych - tak określić można okres znaczony płytami o wątpliwym poziomie artystycznym - na scenę powraca Popol Vuh, jedna z legend niemieckiej awangardy. Dzisiaj grupa znana nielicznym, zwykle kojarzona z muzyką do filmów Wernera Herzoga i surowym, akustycznym brzmieniem. Czy może zaskoczyć jeszcze słuchacza? Okazuje się, że tak.
Messa di Orfeo to album dziwny. Po raz pierwszy w długiej historii zespołu na okładce pojawiła się wzmianka o nagraniu koncertowym: 20 września 1998 place i labirynt uliczek adriatyckiego miasteczka Molfetta wypełniły światła, ruchome obrazy oraz dobiegające z głośników... brzęczenie pszczół i cykad. Time Zones'98, festiwal form nowatorskich, łączących muzykę z happeningiem, wymarzone miejsce dla niepoprawnego wizjonera Floriana Fricke i jego nowego projektu - multimedialnego widowiska pobudzającego "halucynogenne ośrodki umysłu" projekcjami video, głosami owadów, plamami syntetycznego dźwięku, mistyczną recytacją w wykonaniu włoskiej aktorki i chóru: Ziemia i ja to Jedno / Ich oczy i moje oczy to Jedno / Ich uszy i moje uszy to Jedno... Ponoć nie wszyscy widzowie zrozumieli i docenili zamysł autora. Nieobecnym na spektaklu przypadło zadanie trudniejsze - otrzymali płytę z jego ścieżką dźwiękową (którą otwiera zupełnie nie pasująca do całości piosenka) oraz książeczkę z tekstem i kolorowymi zdjęciami. Transcendentalne przesłanie skierowane do ludzi wrażliwych, nie akceptujących panoszących się wokół komercji i łomotu? Być może. Chciałbym, aby tak było.Michał Greupner
